Cryo-Electron Microscopy

Overview

Born out of an initiative to strengthen structural biology at the Yale School of Medicine, the electron cryomicroscopy facility (cryoEM) was jointly established in 2000 by the Departments of Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry and Cellular and Molecular Physiology. From its inception, the facility has been directly supported by the Yale School of Medicine to provide Yale faculty and staff with access to state-of-the-art imaging capabilities for the strucbiological complexes. Because of the complex nature of molecular microscopy projects, this facility does not offer direct services. Instead, interested investigators usually meet with one of the Directors to discuss feasibility of the project. Based on this initial assessment, new users are trained by facility staff, currently Dr. Unger from the Department of Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry, until they are able to use the equipment independently. Where necessary, further advice and training in digital image processing can be provided in a collaborative setting. The facility is located in rooms SHM IE26 (microscopes) and SHM IE50-52 (image processing).
