As part of the Center for Cell and Molecular Imaging (CCMI), the Electron Microscopy Core Facility provides expert assistance in a vast array of electron microscopy techniques to investigators within the School of Medicine and the Yale research community.  One of the main specialties of the laboratory is immuno-gold immunocytochemistry on ultra-thin cryosections.  Combined with stereology, this technique allows the quantitative characterization of the distribution of proteins in cells and tissues at a level of resolution unattainable by light microscopy. Other techniques available in our laboratory include regular morphology of plastic-embedded samples, stereology, scanning electron microscopy, freeze-fracture and rotary-shadowing, three-dimensional reconstructions from serial sections, low-temperature embedding and negative staining.
